Descriptions
BEGINNER
LEVEL 1
A progressive course focusing on solidifying the basics of Salsa
dancing. Musicality, timing, rhythm, leading and following
are the core essentials covered in the course. At this early
stage you will learn how to string a group of simple steps together
to look proficient on the dance floor. Our specific dance
exercises and constant partner rotation will help develop intrinsic
leading and following skills that allow you to be danceable with
ANY partner, meet new people and have fun while doing it!
Basic turns, Cross Body Lead and an introduction to Open Shines*
are taught at this level.
BEGINNER (LEVELS 2 & 3)
Prerequisite :Beginner 1 or assessment. While strengthening
what you have learned in Beginner 1, we start you learning slightly
longer phrases of Salsa dance steps, all the while referring back
to what you first learned. Here we begin to see the fruits
of Level 1, ingraining the necessary tools for great and relaxed
dancing. Again a progressive course that paves with ease
the way to intermediate!
INTERMEDIATE (LEVELS 4, 5 &
6)
Prerequisite: Beginner Levels or assessment. These courses
are for people who already have a good idea of how to dance Salsa
but need help with linking steps together into their own danceable
turn patterns. These levels help develop consistency and
fluidity in your dancing all the while continuing to concentrate
on the detail of hand connection and the importance of proper
leading and following techniques. New and more intermediate
turn patterns and open shines* are taught.
INTERMEDIATE (LEVEL 7) & ADVANCED
1 & 2
Prerequisite: Intermediate 4-6 or assessment. These levels
are for the Salsa club frequenters and are for those looking to
increase the variety and repertoire of their Salsa dance steps.
Multiple spin/turn techniques for both partners are covered thoroughly.
More advanced and longer turn patterns are taught, all the while
learning to spin better and add style to your dancing!
SALSA CHALLENGE!
Prerequisite: advanced level or assessment: This course
is for the experienced dancer who is looking to challenge themselves
with new material, and also for the performer in all of us who
is dying to get out. Longer turn patterns and funky open
shines* are taught at a fast pace.
Beginner
Adult Ballet
During this 7 week introductory course to Ballet, students will
be learning the basics of Ballet. This includes: positions, relationship
to the bar, and basic bar work. This course is specially designed
for students with NO previous Ballet or Dance background and is
ideal for those looking to improve their strength, balance, posture,
co-ordination, agility and achieve an overall solid foundation
on which to build essential dancing skills that can be applied
in all dance forms.
CARDIO SALSA/MERENGUE SWEAT!
Need to lose those pounds, or just add some FUN cardiovascular
activity to your life routine? Come check out Ivy Cuervo,
the fireball of energy that will keep you stepp'n and sweat'n
to the latest and greatest SALSA & Merengue tunes.
Known for her boundless enthusiasm, Ivy is also a Cardio
Salsa, and Hip Hop instructor for Fitness Clubs of Canada, Ballys, Exclusively Women's, and The City of Richmond hill.
FLAMENCO
For the beginner flamenco student: Learn not only how to
add Spanish Flare to your being, but exercise profound discipline
in your upper body! Flamenco greatly improves posture, and
teaches you to move your arms, hands, and fingers with precision,
grace and elegance. Intricate foot control and placement
are covered in detail in order to pave the road for solid flamenco
training. A small dance choreography is also taught.
CHA, CHA, MERENGUE, BACHATA, AND
CUMBIA
Learn how to dance these Cuban, Domincan, and Colombian dances
respectively in our workshop environments. Adding these
dances to you repertoire along with Salsa could essentially mean
never having to sit one out! Check the insert for workshop
dates and times.
LADIES STYLING
Add elegance, style and sexiness to your dancing! Incorporate
femininity with fancy arm and hand styling; add hip, shoulder,
and fluid body movement to your solo footwork or partner dancing.
Emphasis is placed on finding your own individual style through
a variety of confidence-building exercises in a women-only environment.
Tricks, flicks, waves, pumps, pulses and flair are in abundance
in this class. Bring your attitude with you!
CHILDREN CLASSES
These classes are a great way to help your child develop better
coordination. Children are shown steps, body movement and style
by doing repetitive choreography for ease of recall. When classes
come to an end, the children will have the opportunity to perform
a short routine and show parents their superstar qualities. Classes
are available for children ages 7-11 and 12-15.
*Open Shines description:
Term coined in New York Style Salsa; solo salsa footwork used
to increase musicality, timing, co-ordination and also to enhance
partner dancing! Taught in short routines for ease of recall.
